Astrology has captivated human attention for centuries, offering a mystical framework to make sense of life’s complexities.
While there’s no scientific evidence to support astrology’s validity, many still find it intriguing and even helpful.
Why do so many people believe in astrology if it doesn’t work? The answer lies in the psychological, social, and emotional benefits it provides.
Whether it’s offering a sense of control, providing comfort, or sparking curiosity, astrology fulfils various human needs that go beyond its accuracy.
Here are 13 reasons why believing in astrology, even if it’s not effective, can still offer real advantages.
1. Illusion of Control
Astrology gives people the feeling that they can understand their own lives and predict their future, offering an illusion of control over the unknown.
2. Meaning and Purpose
People who rely on astrological readings may find meaning and purpose in the interpretation. Life events gain significance, and this may allow a person to navigate life better, with a direction in mind, even though they may not have been the ones who set it.
3. Emotional Comfort
This is probably one of the main reasons people choose astrology services even when they know they may not be valid.
Astrology, and many other pseudosciences, turn out to be a good-enough coping mechanism, when better ones cannot be activated to manage life’s complexity and uncertainty.
These readings often make people feel good about themselves, their direction in life, and about the relationships they are in.
Here are several examples of emotional comfort that may be triggered by astrological services:
As a result of self-serving bias, where people interpret astrological readings in ways that favour positive outcomes for themselves, there may be a temporary boost in self-esteem, confidence, optimism, hope, sense of personal worth, etc.
A psychological placebo effect may also generate heightened motivation, wish fulfilment—at least at a mental level—and other positive feelings.
Through astrology, people may become more self-aware; the information revealed by the readings may encourage the individual to look closer at themselves from a personal growth perspective and reflect more on their traits, goals, and aspirations.
Anxiety may be reduced if cognitive reappraisal is activated as a result of a reading. This would mean that undesirable or negatively-charged situations may be reinterpreted in a less threatening light, thus lowering stress levels.
The many good emotional outcomes may create the environment for a cascade of positive changes. Creativity may be ignited by readings, the person may focus more on self-care, and many simply find comfort in the ritualistic nature through horoscopes and zodiac-based routines.
4. Feeling Special and Superior to Others
Astrology allows people to feel unique, based on their charts, and also superior to other individuals who maybe do not tap into this kind of hidden, mystical knowledge.
5. Group Acceptance and A Feeling of Belonging
Sharing astrological beliefs can foster social bonding, helping individuals connect with others, feel a sense of belonging, and develop empathy.
6. Uncertainty Tolerance
Astrology may help individuals manage stress and the fear of the unknown by offering simple explanations for life’s unpredictability.
7. Nostalgia, Tradition, and Romanticism
Astrology taps into cultural traditions, evoking nostalgia and romanticizing the past, which can provide a comforting connection to heritage and history.
8. Simplicity
Offering guidance in decision-making, astrology simplifies complex situations, helping people avoid overwhelm, release perfectionism, and embrace alternative problem-solving.
9. Identity Formation
People may connect their sense of identity to those traits allegedly possessed by their zodiac sign, and may even exhibit behaviours, attitudes, and set goals in accordance with the alleged influence of celestial bodies on their sign. Individuals who believe in astrology may think that they understand better who they are, through the information provided by this framework.
10. Relief and Responsibility
Explaining one’s life events through cosmic forces creates the idea that the individual is not ultimately responsible or in charge of their own life. Therefore, believers may feel less accountable for failures or problematic outcomes. It all seems to be ultimately, out of their control, so why bother worrying about any of it anyway.
11. Temporal Focus
Astrology may help explain your past and present, but it ultimately sets your attention toward the future and long-term goals. This type of thinking fosters hope, optimism, and motivation.
12. Curiosity and Exploration
Belief in astrology stimulates curiosity and encourages exploration, leading to new insights and open-mindedness toward different ideas, whether mystical or philosophical.
13. Fantasy and Escapism
Astrology provides an escape from the pressures of reality, allowing people to indulge in fantasy, imagination, and a playful engagement with the cosmos and knowledge of past generations.
Thanks for this. You recommended it to me based on my comment on another post. However, I think this article is problematic because it seems like it should look at 13 benefits and 13 harms (many of which are just a negative version of the positive effects). I mean, astrology and a lot of the patterns of thinking you describe here are also harmful to believers as well as the people around them… For me, the question is: In what ways is Belief X helping and harming an individual, the people around him or her and the broader world?
